“This exhibition celebrates the value of music.
Music is a pain killer, an anti-depressant, an escape. It makes us dance and sing and laugh, and it is a way of communication. It makes life bearable, and even worth living. It bridges the divides between rich and poor a bit. I bet even homeless people listen to music to make life a bit more bearable. Anybody, from the guy in the ivory tower to the homeless person on the street listens to music.
These pieces are a bit of the history of 20th century music. Although they don’t represent all types of music, they do represent a wide variety, because what ticks one person’s box doesn’t necessarily tick another person’s box, and all boxes need to be ticked. And we need as many different boxes as possible. “ - Brigit Beemster
