“This body of work is inspired by a particular landscape close to where I live. It is a place I have visited repeatedly throughout my life,a place of safety and tranquillity. We all have these places of atmospheric sobriety which make us feel safe. I have an on-going fascination with trying to re-create the feeling I experience when I am in this particular place. It has a lot to do with personal memories and emotion.
I find the medium of charcoal satisfying in creating this work. Its subtle properties help me translate my interpretation of the landscape. Moving the charcoal around with my fingers on heavy Italian paper almost seems to take on a magical quality. I slowly build up layers, adding and subtracting, sometimes adding ink and pastel ,all to help me to evoke atmosphere and depth in each piece.”

Lisa Gingles
Lisa´s work is mainly made up of small drawings and collage using old book covers and ripped out pages as a base. She looks for inspiration in mythology, psychology, everyday experiences, and memories.
In this exhibition, she has brought together several themes that play with all of these ideas, and brings the old papers to life with her drawings “I mostly use pages and book covers of antique books because I like that they have made they own history. Someone has read the book, touched their pages, left stains on them, and the natural effect age has on them. To me it says much more than a blank page.”
