Today our featured artists are Mary Rohan, Una Sealy, Bettina Seitz, Angie Shanahan and Anita Shelbourne.

We also include the poem “A Single Rose” by Leland Bardwell. Leland’s poem “St Brigid’s Day 1989” was circulated to all participating artists as the thematic inspiration for the exhibition.

“ My inspiration in Leland Bardwell’s poem is nature based.  The women celebrating in the landscape, the coming of Spring, Brigid’s day.  Her poem evokes images of the ritual gathering of the rushes, and the making of St. Brigid’s crosses.”

Maureen Quinn: I am originally from Ballinasloe, Co Galway and now reside in Sligo.  Holy icons spoke to me like no other art form as a result of my visits to museums and churches in Greece, Italy, Bulgaria and Russia.  Ì answered the call, learned from the most eminent and exhibited in Christ Church Cathedral in Dublin, Derry and Hyde Bridge Gallery, Sligo.

History tell us that St. Brigid was an inveterate traveller around Ireland, driven by her faith in God and love for the poor. That image of an all action woman, contrasts with my icon depiction of her in quieter moments, which in contemporary parlance would be referred to as being in the now.

Gwen O’Dowd began exhibiting in the mid 1980’s. Her formal concerns have always been rooted deeply in the tradition of landscape painting. Yet the specific locales from which she has drawn inspiration, the modes of addressing them and the methaphoric import of the resulting series of paintings have varied considerably over the years.

“Michael Harding described Leland Bardwell as having ‘the softest wildness I’ve ever seen in human eyes’. I have tried to see through those eyes at the soft wild landscape that inspired her.”

“The women’s calls go up across the lake. On this still day……..”

I immediately found inspiration for my drawing in the vivid imagery described in this poem.

I could clearly visualise this still island of trees as the view from the “reed-hushed” shore, across the calm water of the lake.

She works with nonferrous metals developing a visual narrative using the techniques of repousse, etching and gilding.

“I live on a farm by the Shannon where reeds grow along the shore.  Walking down through the fields towards the river on a windy autumnal day, the reeds swayed.  I thought about Leyland Bardwell standing very still by the water, watching and listening, words weaving through her mind.   Picking up seeds, light as feathers, I get drawing, teasing the lines along until at last I see something I know could work in metal.”

Some years ago, I visited an exhibition titled “Analysing Cubism” at The Crawford Gallery. Inspired by its’ women artists, my childhood experiences of riding bare backed and the county of Kildare together with the imagery within Bardwell’s poem my drawing and intuition found this response.

Póilín Mc Gowan: Born in Co. Sligo where she still resides, Póilín draws inspiration from her surroundings of Maugherow’s Wild Atlantic Way, where Leyland lived her final days. She creates semi-abstract oil and encaustic wax paintings of the sea and local landscape.

“Ready for Gathering’ is created using encaustic wax and mixed media to capture the scene of an untouched reed bed, waiting to be picked. The pagan festival (Imbolc) marks the beginning of spring, I wish to convey the romantic content symbolising women’s hardships, camaraderie and strength, of what is to come, all of which Leyland Bardwell passionately writes of.

Mc Williams, Catherine.jpg

Catherine McWilliams: The Mourne and Cooley mountains dominated my world as a child but growing up and living in Belfast, it’s surrounding hills that speak to me.  In the dark days of the seventies my paintings were of figures in bleak oppressive landscapes. But in the eighties in the all woman show Pandora’s Box my Pandora was the hopeful figure temporarily trapped in the box.

Here Young Bridget walks freely and happily amongst the rushes that grow in my local Waterworks park.

Bríd Higgins Ní Chinnéide is a Dublin-born artist. She studied painting in St Petersburg and has lived in the US and the UK. She has returned to Ireland and now works from her home studio in Dublin.

“I was inspired by the image of the women gathering rushes, something I have done myself. The depiction of the hands holding the rushes, is a synecdoche of female industry and craft and a connection with the natural world. The reference for the work was an image of myself, which is appropriate here given my name.”

Annie Harrison|: “Born in the U.K., I have lived more than half of my life in the North West of Ireland.  I returned to painting as a mature student and completed my Degree in 2002. I chose to make this work on a potentially delicate (e.g. paper) ground in an attempt to explore converse concepts such as fragility and resilience in relation to the inevitability of ageing.

People, like stamps, are prone to wear and tear. Yet both may safely travel the globe. The Irish Worldwide stamp motif acknowledges Irelands own global diaspora.

The subject is caught off guard in vulnerable, eyes-closed pose, an introspective gaze. Anonymous and unwitting representative of the windswept amongst us, she carries the “satchel” of her (our) years with enduring, yet inevitably transient, grace.”
